Apartment extension in Zuid
Cantilevering couches
When a colleague asked me to help a befriended family to extend their living room, I was eager to assist and paddled my way through the minutiae of an extensive building permit (considering the limited job at hand).
Located on top of a former chocolate factory, way underneath the Mars bar had been produced since its introduction to the Netherlands in 1937.
Long gone the production, followed by the offices that used to be situated above the production levels, having been refurbished to apartments some time ago.
An existing wall was knocked down, saving the original bricks for the new cladding, the unused roof terrace beyond was added to the existing (somewhat oblong) living-room, adding up to the perfect dimensions for its purpose. Two huge windows with seating look outward into the green courtyard like squared eyes, making it possible to hover above the garden and terraces below while lounging comfortably. Skylights and side windows let in more light and air, adding freshness and connections into all directions.
On the outside the zigzagging skyline is accompanied by a monumental brick face with squarish eyes, watching over the idyllic garden shared by all inhabitants on the perimeter block.
